INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS

Debate is the use of words and facts to persuade an audience that your side is correct. In the auspices of the academic world, there are three formats for debate. The first is the All-Asians format popular in Asia and Australia. The second is British Parliamentary style which is popular in Europe and the United Kingdom. Finally, the last format is Policy and Lincoln-Douglas Debate found in the United States of America. All-Asians and Policy are very similar contextually, but the need for substantiation in All-Asians is much less. Lincoln-Douglas is a one on one format. We hope to cover the first two formats extensively, All-Asians and British Parliamentary, while also teaching the students the fundamentals of Public Speaking, both Extemporaneous and Impromptu, along with basic English grammar and writing.
At the end of this course, you will:
• Know the fundamentals of All-Asians Debating from the format, argumentation, case construction, rebuttals, and presenting.
• Be able to create a valid public speech given 1 minute preparation time.
• Understand the criteria in judging both All-Asians and British Parliamentary Debate.
• Be able to write a complete case involving all aspects of the Prime Minister’s responsibilities as well as the subsequent speeches thereafter.
